This past Friday evening, we were on location at Villa Pena in Sterling Heights to film the Bocce with the Brothers event, hosted for the 7th year by Michael Schodowski of Shelving, Inc. who is extremely passionate about giving back to the Capuchin Brothers what they have endlessly given to others.
The gathering of almost 500 people enabled the attendees to come out and support the mission work of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit.
As part of the festival evening, there was a tribute painting by well-known Dave Santia, a speed painter, of Blessed Solanus Casey’s image. While Dave created the mural on stage, opera singer Aaron Caruso sang Ava Maria. It was beautiful to witness the art and singing in person. Mike’s goal this year was to raise $40,000 for the soup kitchen through ticket sales and auction items. The one of a kind painting of Blessed Solanus Casey was bought with the highest bid of $5000.
All of the attendees were also entertained by the Capuchin Soup Kitchen Choir – a mix of men and women who, at one time, went through the Capuchin Soup Kitchen themselves. Their voices were unbelievably beautiful.
After the ballroom festivities, many headed off to the bocce ball courts to play a round with a few of the Capuchin Friars.
